The geological past of the Romanche valley has left behind features of industrial value, of which man has been able to take full advantage.
The first level of the museum depicts the history of the Alpine metamorphosis, which shaped the valley and made it an unavoidable corridor for crossing the mountains. The natural features, along with mineral resources, hydraulic energy and wood reserves, have led to the development of various types of industry over the centuries: hammers in the Middle Ages, followed by blast furnaces, paper mills and then electrometallurgy and electrochemistry.
The second level traces the development of these activities and the lives of the people involved. Man, in turn, has shaped the valley by building dams on the Romanche River. Increasing numbers of factories (thanks to the hydroelectricity) have attracted engineering companies, such as Neyret, Hulin, Keller, Lacroix, Péchiney and Cuaem, as well as a cosmopolitan workforce. This has led to a full range of housing styles, including workers’ housing estates and mansions, as well as industrial architecture and social facilities.
