Oisans has always been a forerunner in hydraulics and hydroelectricity: the first line transporting electricity in 1883, linked Grenoble to Vizille (14 km). Engineers Keller and Leleux took full advantage of the Romanche valley and developed their electrometallurgy empire thanks to hydraulic energy.
The Hydrelec Museum bears witness to this past by retracing the main inventions that have enabled us to progress from the age of mills to that of the production of electrical energy.
The Hydrelec museum features:
The first hydraulic wheels and the ingenious systems for controlling water;
The important discoveries that have marked the progression to the industrial age, such as turbines, dynamos and transformers;
The various ways of using waterpower in classic hydraulic power stations and the most common types of dams;
Behind the scenes at the flagship of the French hydraulic industry: GRAND’MAISON. This permanent exhibition recounts the epic tale in an attractive way thanks to bygone or animated models, videos, interactive terminals and fun programmes for the young.
Each week this summer 2006, the Hydrelec museum organizes commented visits on pedal boats on the Verney lake, in Allemont.
A pleasant way to discover this site and its particularity: it is the downstream reservoir of the Grand Maison installation.
