Located in the heart of de St Christophe en Oisans, a stone’s throw away from the cemetery where famous guides from La Bérarde and the Vénéon valley, as well as many famous mountaineers are laid to rest, the museum traces the history of mountaineering in Oisans and the emotions caused by the adventure, passion and freedom synonymous with this sport.
The first exhibition room presents the Vénéon valley, which cuts its way 30 km into the heart of the massif, together with traditions, scenery, geology and habitat. A large model will help you to find your way around the valley, the 10 mountain huts and the 45 summits over 3500 m high which have witnessed some of the most dramatic moments of the history of Alpine mountaineering.
The rest of the museum features the history of the pioneers, the epic tale of Pierre Gaspard climbing the Meije, the mountain guides, the ‘firsts’ by a succession of legendary French and international mountaineers: Whymper, Zsigmondy, Angelo Dibona, the Mayer brothers, Gervasutti, Fourastier and Madier, Devies, Tobey, Leray and Boell, as well as the Gaspards, the Rodiers, the Turcs, the Paquets, the Bruns and the Roderons.
A temporary exhibition is entitled Women of the Vénéon valley
