The pasture museum, founded by the ‘Fédération des Alpages de l’Isère’, is located in the heart of Besse en Oisans, a village listed in the ‘Inventaire des Bâtiments de France’. During your visit to this fascinating museum, you can take a trip out to the mountain pasture and see a demonstration of the shepherds at work with their dogs. See how those involved in seasonal migration moved to the summer pastures, how they lived and worked, the dogs and livestock, the chalets and the mountains.
In a setting that is unique in France, this fun and educative presentation will be enjoyed by all the family. It gives a fascinating insight into the lives of these people who have made the mountains what they are today and ensure that they will be preserved in the future.
The temporary exhibition is entitled Cultivation of the earth in miniature - Models of Oisans houses and tools. Maurice Albert Faranchin, wood sculptor and former shepherd, exhibits around twenty of his models and many miniatures, all reflecting his profound humanity. His work pays homage to the people of Oisans, their good sense that has enabled them to adapt as best they can to the mountain environment.
